NHRC Takes Cognizance of Maternal Deaths in Hospital, Seeks Response from Rajasthan Chief Secretary Within 4 Weeks
Kota, May 16: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious cognizance of the deaths of women following childbirth at a government hospital in Kota. Acting on a complaint filed by human rights advocate Ansar Indori, the Commission has registered Case No. 958/20/21/2026 and sought a detailed Action Taken Report from the Chief Secretary of the Rajasthan Government within four weeks.
Advocate Ansar Indori stated that the Commission initiated action based on allegations of medical negligence made by the victims’ families and reports published in newspapers. In protest, family members had reportedly refused to accept the bodies and staged a sit-in demonstration at the hospital.
He said that on 15 May 2026, the NHRC issued a notice to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Commission has demanded a factual report and details of action taken within four weeks.
According to Indori, the Commission has specifically sought responses on the following points:
- The causes of the maternal deaths and post-mortem reports
- Availability of doctors and hospital staff, along with duty rosters
- Steps taken by the hospital administration after the deaths
- Compensation or assistance provided to the affected families
- Proposed measures to prevent such incidents in the future
In his statement, Ansar Indori said that the deaths of the women have raised serious questions about the healthcare system. Family members allege that the deaths occurred due to doctors’ negligence. He described the incident as a direct violation of the right to life and safe motherhood guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
He further said that the NHRC’s intervention has given hope of justice to the affected families, and that the state government must now conduct a transparent investigation and take action against those found responsible.
