PM Modi at BRICS 2025: A New Vision for Global South and Climate Justice
Rio de Janeiro, July 8, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a transformative overhaul of BRICS during the 17th annual summit held in Brazil, positioning India as a voice for the Global South and urging for an inclusive, sustainable, and climate-conscious world order. His proposal for a “new form of BRICS” seeks to redefine the grouping’s role amid rising geopolitical tensions and the challenges of development in a multipolar world.
Addressing leaders from across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East—members of the now-expanded BRICS + alliance—Modi outlined his vision to reshape the bloc into a force that “Builds Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability”. The phrase, cleverly forming the acronym “BRICS”, reflects India’s push to pivot the alliance toward the urgent concerns of the Global South, including debt relief, equitable climate action, food and energy security, and technology access.
“Climate justice is not a choice, it is a moral obligation. And only when we ensure fairness for the Global South, can global sustainability be truly achieved,” Modi asserted during the plenary session.
A Shift Towards the Global South
India’s position at the summit emphasized South-South cooperation, highlighting how many developing nations continue to suffer disproportionately from climate change, economic shocks, and technological exclusion—despite contributing least to global emissions or financial crises.
PM Modi proposed that BRICS evolve into a platform of empowerment for developing nations, enabling them to have a stronger voice in global institutions such as the United Nations, IMF, and World Bank. He advocated for a democratized international order where economic policies, climate funding, and digital rules are shaped with equity and inclusivity.
Prime Minister Modi’s remarks came as BRICS continues to debate its expanding mandate, with now over 11 countries, including Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, joining the dialogue. India remains cautious yet optimistic about expansion, ensuring the group remains values-driven, not interest-fragmented.
