Massive Blast Rocks Telangana Pharma Factory, Multiple Casualties Reported

Hyderabad, July 1, 2025 – A devastating explosion at a pharmaceutical factory in Telangana’s Sangareddy district shook the region on Monday afternoon, leaving at least 7 workers dead and over a dozen seriously injured, officials confirmed. The blast occurred at a chemical unit located in the industrial zone near Gaddapotharam, a hub known for housing several pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The sudden explosion sent shockwaves across nearby localities, causing panic among residents and workers in adjacent units.

According to preliminary reports, the explosion took place during a solvent mixing process, possibly due to overheating or an electrical short circuit in the chemical reactor. Eyewitnesses recounted hearing a loud bang followed by flames and a cloud of toxic smoke billowing from the factory premises. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, while local fire tenders battled for hours to douse the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighboring facilities.

District Collector Valluru Kranthi and senior police officials visited the site and confirmed that a detailed probe has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident. “We have deployed multiple rescue teams. Injured workers have been shifted to Gandhi Hospital and are being treated for severe burns and inhalation injuries,” the Collector said. Authorities are yet to release the names of the deceased pending family notifications.

The incident has once again raised concerns over industrial safety protocols and hazardous chemical handling in India’s booming pharmaceutical sector. Hyderabad, often referred to as the “Pharma Capital of India”, has seen rapid industrialization in recent years, but critics argue that worker safety and factory compliance standards have not kept pace. Environmental activists have demanded a high-level inquiry and accountability from the factory management.

As rescue operations continue, the state government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and assured free treatment for the injured. Meanwhile, the Telangana Pollution Control Board has sealed the unit pending further inspection. The tragedy has reignited the debate on regulatory oversight and the need for stricter enforcement of industrial safety norms in high-risk manufacturing units across the country.
