He was a proponent of multi-culturalism and freedom of expression. He was a critic of religious fundamentalism and Hindutva. He had publicly condemned the demolition of Babri Mosque in 1992 and later spoke against the attempts to create controversy about the Idgah Maidan in Hubli. He opposed RSS, BJP and other Hindu organisations on several occasions. He opposed Narendra Modi for the Prime Minister’s post in the 2014 parliament elections.
Once he came on the street carrying a play card “I am an urban Naxalite”.
Our greatest tribute to him will be to strengthen his secular legacy. He was the true citizen of India founded by Jawaharlal Nehru.
