In Assam, 13 people were killed and 16 injured when a group of heavily armed militants opened fire in a crowded market place in Kokrajhar district today. Police said, the incident took place when two militants came on an auto and fired indiscriminately in Balajan Tiniali market this afternoon. Security forces patrolling the area retaliated and one militant was killed. Additional DGP L R Bishnoi said as per preliminary investigation, militants belonging to the Songbijit faction of NDFB were involved in the firing. Huge cache of arms and explosives was recovered from the spot. Security forces have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
“The unexpected incident occurred at Balajan Tiniali weekly market at Kokrajhar town. There was no militant attacks at Kokrajhar and nearby areas for the past two years due to the strict vigil of police and other security forces. Senior police officials suspected that today’s attack was designed to divert attention of the security forces. The army PRO said two militants have arrived at market in an auto rickshaw and fired indiscriminately. Eyewitnesses said , militants also lobbed grenades.
