Delhi Water Crisis: SC Directs Delhi Govt To Approach Yamuna River Board

Date:

The Supreme Court of India today instructed the Delhi government to approach the Upper Yamuna River Board for its water supply needs. This directive came in response to Himachal Pradesh’s unexpected reversal of its previous claim of having surplus water available.

Delhi Water Crisis

A vacation bench consisting of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B Varale issued this order. They mandated that the Delhi government submit an application to the Yamuna River Board by 5 pm, emphasizing the request on humanitarian grounds.

This decision followed a significant change in stance by Himachal Pradesh. Previously, Himachal Pradesh had informed the court that it had a surplus of 136 cusecs of water. However, it later retracted this statement, asserting that it no longer had surplus water to share. Consequently, the Supreme Court directed Delhi to seek alternative means to secure its water supply.
