Ambassador Suhel Ajaz Khan Leaves Riyadh, But Questions Remain Over the Depth of India’s Diplomatic Gains
As India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, prepares to conclude his tenure in Riyadh, official circles have praised his role in strengthening bilateral ties. However, beyond the diplomatic accolades, questions remain about whether the relationship translated into tangible strategic gains for India.
During his tenure, India and Saudi Arabia continued to expand cooperation in areas such as energy, investment, technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges. Yet many of these initiatives were part of an already established trajectory, making it difficult to assess how much of the progress can be attributed directly to Ambassador Khan’s diplomatic efforts.
Supporters credit him with presenting a modern image of India and engaging with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 reforms. Critics, however, argue that public diplomacy alone is not enough, pointing out that several key issues affecting the Indian diaspora, trade diversification and long-term strategic cooperation still require sustained policy action beyond diplomatic messaging.
Ambassador Khan maintained close engagement with the Indian community in the Kingdom, but many expatriates continue to seek faster consular services, stronger labour protections and more institutional support. These concerns remain central to evaluating the effectiveness of India’s diplomatic presence.
As Ambassador Khan departs Riyadh, he leaves behind a relationship that remains strategically important. Whether his tenure will ultimately be remembered for producing measurable outcomes or for maintaining continuity in an already expanding partnership will likely be judged over time rather than through official commendations alone.
