The True Measure of Greatness: Valuing Human Life Above All

These developments are the serious challenges to the principles of sovereignty…

The word great is used generously in our everyday language. We describe the universe as great, the oceans as great, the mountains and the skies as great. Even at a more modest level we apply the same word to countries, cities, monuments and sometimes even to a single tree or building.

Yet, despite its frequent use, the true meaning of greatness is rarely examined with seriousness. What, in reality, deserves to be called the greatest?

For those who believe in a divine order, the universe itself did not come into existence by chance but was created by a supreme Creator. The vastness of the cosmos the galaxies, stars, planets and oceans reflects the majesty of that creation.

However, within this magnificent universe there exists something far more remarkable, human life. Among all creations, the human being stands apart because of the unique gift of intellect, creativity and moral judgment.

If the Creator brought the universe and humanity into existence, it is the human mind that has shaped almost everything else that defines civilization. From prehistoric times, when early humans struggled merely to survive, to the dawn of organised societies and the evolution of great civilizations, it has been human wisdom that has cultivated progress.

Agriculture, architecture, philosophy, science and technology all are the fruits of human intellect. The modern world, with its advanced infrastructure, global communication systems and sophisticated medical science, is a testament to the extraordinary capabilities of the human mind.

Despite this remarkable journey, humanity often fails to recognize the true value of human life itself. Conflicts between nations are frequently explained as a “clash of civilizations” or a “clash of religions.” Yet, in reality, they are neither.

At their core, most conflicts arise from a clash of human values differences in how societies respect dignity, justice and the sanctity of life. When these values weaken, violence and confrontation take their place.

In this regard, some societies have demonstrated a deeper institutional respect for individual human life. The United States, for instance, is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most robust modern democracies, where civil liberties and individual rights are strongly emphasised.

One of the most striking features of that society is the respect shown to every citizen, particularly to those who sacrifice their lives in service to the nation. When soldiers are killed in war, the solemn tributes paid to them reflect a deep cultural recognition of the value of each individual life.

This raises an important question: why is America so frequently criticised across the world ? Is it because of its prosperity, its vast natural resources, or its technological and scientific leadership ? In many areas especially science, technology and medical research the United States remains far ahead of most other nations.

Its institutions have contributed immensely to global progress, producing life-saving drugs, advanced medical equipments and scientific innovations that benefit people far beyond its borders.

Yet the real issue may lie elsewhere. Americans, like people in many other societies, believe in God and in moral accountability. However, the difference often lies in attitudes toward effort and responsibility.

In many parts of the world, complacency prevails, what is easily achieved is considered sufficient and further effort is left to fate or divine will. Progress, however, rarely comes through complacency. It comes through persistent effort, curiosity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Imitation for its own sake is not admirable, but learning from others certainly is. Nations that seek knowledge, discipline and innovation will inevitably progress. Only then can they engage with the world with dignity and confidence, rather than with resentment or insecurity.

Ultimately, the highest form of greatness lies in respecting human life everywhere, not only within national borders but across them. Perhaps the world will move closer to that ideal when every society is guided by leaders who embody compassion, moral courage and humility figures reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi, who placed the value of human life above political power.

Healthy criticism is neither inappropriate nor unwarranted, particularly when directed at the conduct of political leadership rather than the people of a nation.

In the present context, the concern is not with the American public but with President Trump perceived as bringing a distinctly commercial temperament into the realm of governance accompanied by confrontational rhetoric. In second term his approach has increasingly shaped an assertive and unpredictable foreign policy.

His unwavering support for the Israel president Netanyahu during the ongoing tensions and conflict involving US Israel and Iran has further intensified regional anxieties.

Actions such as the dramatic handling of political leadership in Venezuela and the reported targeting and killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader and other high ranking officials have been widely viewed as deeply controversial.

These developments are the serious challenges to the principles of sovereignty and the norms that govern relations among nations.

While debate and criticism are essential in international politics, these events have raised profound questions about restraint, accountability and long term implications of power politics in an already fragile global order.

In the end, the greatness of nations, civilisations, or leaders will not be measured by their power or wealth, but by the degree to which they honour the most precious creation in the universe, human life.
