“No FASTag? Pay More: Govt Imposes Higher Highway Tolls”

Date:

Government Amends Toll Fee Rules, Imposes Higher Charges on Non-FASTag Vehicles

The government has revised the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, introducing new penalties for drivers without a valid FASTag.

Under the updated rules, vehicles entering toll plazas without a functional FASTag will be charged double the usual fee if payment is made in cash.

Those choosing to pay via the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will be charged 1.25 times the standard toll rate for their vehicle category.

These changes are set to take effect from the 15th of next month.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the amendment is intended to improve fee collection efficiency, increase transparency, and promote smoother travel on national highways.

The Ministry claims the move will encourage digital payments and enhance the overall user experience—though the higher financial burden on non-digital or cash-reliant users raises questions about accessibility and fairness for all commuters.
