Violence breaks at JNU, Kaveri Hostel, with several students suffering injuries: ABVP members clash over non-veg food on Ram Navmi.

Amidst the calls for a ban on non-veg food, two student groups clashed in the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus’ Kaveri hostel.

On Sunday afternoon, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) alleged the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members of disrupting mess activities and stopping students from eating non-veg food in the campus.

A scuffle broke out between two groups on Sunday at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi allegedly over non-vegetarian food in which several students were injured. The clashes erupted between the members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left alliance over the serving of non-veg food following an argument between two groups.

The JNUSU has alleged that the ABVP members stopped students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess and created a violent atmosphere. However, the ABVP denied the charge and claimed that “Leftists” obstructed a puja programme organised at the hostel on Ram Navami.

Both sides have accused each other of throwing stones and injuring their members. After the violence, the JNUSU and ABVP students took out separate marches inside the university campus.
The JNUSU alleged that the ABVP, which is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), used “muscle power and goondaism” to create a ruckus, manhandling the staff and asking them not to prepare any non-vegetarian items.
At least sixteen students from both sides – Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) – were injured as chaos reigned on the campus yesterday evening.

Police said the case was registered based on a complaint filed by members of JNUSU, SFI, DSF and AISA early this morning against unknown ABVP students.
