Gerard Pique and pop star Shakira have called time on their relationship of more than a decade. The couple share two children together.
The 45-year-old Colombian singer announced that she is no longer with her 35-year-old Spanish footballer beau after an 11-year relationship.
”We regret to confirm that we are separating,” they said in a statement as reported by AFP news agency. “For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
The two met while filming the music video of Shakira’s Waka Waka, the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The couple announced their separation just over a week after Spanish court documents inched Shakira closer to standing trial in Spain for tax fraud after a Barcelona court dismissed an appeal from the singer.
Spanish prosecutors accused her of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros (USD 15.5 million) on income earned between 2012 and 2014. They say she moved to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with Pique became public but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.
Although Pique and Shakira remained unmarried, they welcomed two sons – Milan and Sasha.
