Waqf Properties are Not Usurped Lands:Mehmood Madni

 

In a conference convened by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on the topic of “Awqaf in India,” numerous influential figures from the waqf movement came together to protect Waqf Act

 

New Delhi, April 27th: In a significant round table conference organized by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind on the topic of “Awqaf in India,” renowned figures within the waqf movements gathered to discuss ways of safeguarding mosques, tombs, and the Waqf Act.

Held at the headquarter of Jamiat Ulama-i- Hind in New Delhi, the conference witnessed the participation of intellectuals and legal experts, responding to the invitation extended by President Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani.

In his opening address,JUH president Maulana Madani, underscored the organization’s proactive stance in safeguarding waqf properties since post-independence, particularly in regions where Muslims migrated to Pakistan.

Drawing upon the counsel of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a comprehensive plan of action was formulated to ensure the protection of these assets. Consequently, it was through the dedicated endeavours of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind that the Waqf Act was enforced in the country.

Dispelling prevalent misconceptions, Maulana Madani emphasized that waqf lands are charitable donations by Muslims and not unlawfully acquired properties. He stressed the need to rectify such misperceptions while ensuring the proper utilization of these properties for their intended charitable purposes.

In response to these challenges, the working committee of Jamiat Ulama Hind formed a central committee empowered to engage stakeholders nationwide and formulate a roadmap within the legal framework. Collaborative sessions with experts across various states have laid the groundwork for a concerted effort to raise awareness, particularly among Muslim youth, regarding the significance of waqf endowments.

Following Maulana Madani’s address, extensive discussions ensued, with intellectuals advocating for legal and political actions to safeguard the Waqf properties and rectify documentation related to waqf properties.

A committee, under the patronage of Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, was formed to coordinate efforts and devise a strategic plan. Distinguished individuals from diverse backgrounds, including legal, academic, and administrative spheres, have been enlisted to contribute to this vital initiative.

The convener of the committee will be former Chief Commissioner Income Tax Pune Akram Al Jabar Khan and co- convener Owais Sultan Khan. The committee will comprise as members Advocate Supreme Court and secretary Jamiat Ulama-i- Hind Niaz Ahmed Farooqui, Advocate Afzal Muhammad Farooqui Safavi, Advocate Fazeel Ayubi, Advocate MR Shamshad, Advocate Rauf Rahim, retired IS and former CEO Madhya Pradesh Waqf Board Nisar Ahmed, Advocate Tahir M. Hakeem, Ex-Member Central Waqf Council Iqbal Shaikh, Retired IFS, Ex-Special Officer, Waqf Board for Andhra Pradesh MJ Akbar, Educationist Saif Ali Naqvi, Director, Waqf Liaison Forum Farid Tangekar, Renowned Historian Mufti Attaur Rahman Qasmi, senior journalist Parvez Bari.

Apart from above mentioned, prominent personalities expressing their views during the conference included Rizwan Qadri, Prof. Muhammad Younis, Shahnawaz Ahmed Khan, and others, who shared insights and recommendations to fortify the waqf movement. Mr. Owais Sultan Khan moderated the proceedings, while Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi offered concluding remarks, expressing gratitude to all participants.
