Russia has stepped up its attack on Ukraine Towns in the east and the northeast, days after the West pledged more tanks in what Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a “tank coalition”.
After Germany and the US, Poland has promised an additional 60 tanks on top of 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks it had already pledged. A total of 321 heavy tanks have been promised to Ukraine by several countries, Reuters reported.
But Ukraine President Zelenskyy has called the situation at the front “extremely acute”, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region where Russia is stepping up its offensive. Major battles are underway for Vuhledar, to the southwest of Donetsk, and Bakhmut, to the northeast.

Both sides are expected to launch spring offensives, though the US has advised Ukraine to wait until the latest weapons are in place and training has been provided – a process expected to take several months.
Vladmir Putin’s army in the meantime, are aiming to storm positions held by Ukrainian troops. Zelenskyy has accused Russia of deliberately and methodically destroying the towns and villages around strategic positions, with artillery, air strikes and missiles.

In Donestsk and Bakhmut, the Russian offensive is being led by Wagner Group, a private military company with longtime links to Vladimir Putin. Wagner personnel are marching on the bodies of their own soldiers, as per Ukrainian authorities, indicating the brutal nature of the group’s operations.
In Bohoiavlenka village in Donetsk, fighting around the nearby town of Vuhledar had intensified, with Russian troops constantly trying to advance and capture it. Vuhledar had come under intense shelling in the past 24 hours, with seven buildings and two schools damaged.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has kicked out Mykola Tyshchenko, a lawmaker from its parliamentary faction, after reports he had travelled to Thailand during Ukraine’s grinding war with Russia sparked a public outcry, Reuters reported.
More than a dozen senior officials were fired or resigned this week, including a deputy prosecutor who had come under fire in the press for a holiday in Spain, in the biggest shakeup of the Kyiv leadership since the war began.
Russia has pinned the blame on the US for prolonging the war by arming Kyiv while Ukraine believes the only way to end the war is for allies to give it the weapons to win it.
