DUBLIN, October 8, 2026: Indian activist Umar Khalid has been named the Asia-Pacific recipient of the 2026 Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk (DUBLIN).
The award was presented to Umar’s father Sayyed Qasim Rasool Ilyas at a ceremony at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland as Khalid is currently in Tihar Jail New Delhi.
Apart from Umar Khalid, four other distinguished individuals from around the world received the Front Line Defenders Award 2026.
The Ireland-based human rights organisation recognised Khalid for his activism concerning citizenship rights, minority rights and democratic dissent. He has been in detention since September 2020 in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case.
Delhi Police have accused him of involvement in a broader conspiracy linked to the violence. Khalid has not been convicted in the case, and his prolonged pre-trial detention has attracted international human rights scrutiny.
The award places renewed international attention on questions of civil liberties, the right to dissent and access to a timely trial in India. It is an expression of the awarding organisation’s assessment of Khalid’s human rights work, not a judicial ruling on the criminal allegations against him.
